Ingredient Spotlight: Lucuma

Ingredient Spotlight: Lucuma

Native to South America, Lucuma is no new superfood - in fact, it has been used for centuries! Today, you’ll see lucuma in powder form popping up in healthfood stores as a superfood that can be easily added to baking and smoothies.  Lucuma powder has a butterscotch-like flavor and makes a great sugar alternative that offers additional health benefits.  Along with the amazing natural sweetener of dates, we use lucuma powder in our Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Plant-Based Energy Balls as well as our Salted Caramel Plant-Based Energy Balls to keep them free of refined sugar while upping the nutritional benefits, and giving them a great, unique flavour.

The lucuma powder in our Salted Caramel Energy Balls is what gives it such a unique caramel flavour.

It’s a Natural Sweetener

When you eat refined sugars you often feel an initial boost of energy and then are left with a crash.  We opt for natural sweeteners at Little Tucker to give you that sustained energy and long-lasting pick-me-up that supports you throughout your day.  Lucuma powder contains 75% less sugar than traditional sweeteners by weight and its nutritional content combined with our energy-boosting ingredients and healthy carbohydrates mean that it’s low glycemic, so your blood sugar level stays steady to help prevent you from crashing later in the day.  Plus, unlike refined sugars which have no nutritional value, natural sweeteners contain added nutrients. And, because lucuma powder has a caramely, butterscotch-like taste, it helps to give our Salted Caramel Plant-Based Energy Balls that flavour you love.

It’s Better for Your Digestion

Lucuma, even once made into a powder, is high in fibre, with 100g of lucuma powder containing about 2.3 grams of dietary fibre.  What’s more is that this fibre is a great mix of soluble and insoluble fibre, both of which are important for digestive health. Plus, refined sugars and artifiicial sweeteners can be irritating to your gut, especially for those who have IBS, meaning that a natural sweetener like lucuma is a better choice.

It’s Rich in Antioxidants

Antioxidants are important to include in your diet to help fight free radicals, which can raise your risk of developing certain issues like heart disease and cancer as well as contribute to aging.  These powerful compounds are found in many plant-based foods.  Lucuma powder itself is rich in vitamin C, a common antioxidant that is also well-known for supporting your immune health. Lucuma powder is also rich in other types of antioxidants like polyphenols and carotenoids, which are particularly helpful in reducing inflammation to help promote heart health.

It’s High in Important Nutrients

Lucuma is loaded with plenty of important nutrients.  Surprisingly, lucuma contains the same amount of calcium as a glass of cow’s milk, offering benefits like better bone health.  Another important nutrient for plant-based eaters that lucuma offers is iron, which is important for maintaining your energy levels and focus. Lucuma is also high in zinc, which is important for immune health, and potassium, which helps with hydration, muscle health, and maintaining blood pressure.  If you’re looking for a sweetener that adds extra nutritional benefits, lucuma is a great choice!

It’s Naturally Gluten-Free & Vegan

Perhaps surprisingly, cane sugar and brown sugar aren’t always vegan.  Along with other great natural sweeteners like dates and maple syrup, lucuma is naturally vegan and can be a great part of a plant-based diet.  A vegan or plant-based diet offers additional benefits like better gut health, reduced inflammation, and improved immunity, plus can be better for the environment.  Additionally, if you’re someone who chooses or needs to eat gluten-free, then you know that many sugars can be cross-contaminated with gluten.  We choose lucuma powder as one of our natural sweeteners to keep our products gluten-free and vegan, and accessible for all.
